Summary of Midlothian

Midlothian is an unincorporated area in the county of Chesterfield, Virginia. Part of the western suburbs of Richmond, the area started as a coal mining settlement in the 1700s. The village had one of the oldest mining shafts in the U.S. and produced the nation's first commercially mined coal in 1709.  During the American Revolutionary War, coal pits in Midlothian were used to supply the cannon factory in Westham, on the James River. After the war, Chesterfield coal was shipped by developers to Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and every city in Virginia because of its excellent quality.

In 1807, the first hard-surfaced road in Virginia was graveled. It would go on to become the current Midlothian Turnpike (U.S. Route 60). However, because of all the coal transportation being done on the turnpike, congestion caused residents to urge the state legislature to build a new road or canal. In 1831, the first railroad in Virginia, the Chesterfield Railroad, was in operation. The 13-mile gravity-powered line connected the Midlothian coal mines with wharves in Manchester. In 1852, the now Norfolk Southern Railway had started operating in the area.

However, the success of the mining industry died down in the 1900s. It wasn't until the mid to late 1900s when development to Midlothian started to occur. Post-war construction brought new residents to the area as farm and forest lands became residential subdivisions. Midlothian is said to be named after the Wooldridge family's 1700s coal mining enterprises. Other names given it were Coal Mines and Coalfield. As of the 2010 census, the area has a population of 58,880 people.
