Get To Know Short Pump

Short Pump is an edge city of Richmond, Virginia. A census-designated place (CDP) of Henrico County, the area was named for the short handle pump underneath the porch of the local tavern built by Robert Hyde Saunders. It was originally located at the junction of Three Notched Trail (now Three Chopt Road), Pouncey Tract Road and Richmond Turnpike. Stonewall Jackson, Thomas Jefferson. General Peter Muhlenburer, Ulric Dahlgren, the Marquis de Lafayette, and Earl Cornwallis have visited the area.

Today, Short Pump has a total area of 9.1 square miles. 9.0 square miles of which is land, and 0.12 square miles is water. It is border by the following:

  • Goochland County to the west
  • Wyndham CDP to the north
  • Innsbrook CDP to the east
  • Smaller neighborhoods and Tuckahoe to the south

The CDP is served by Interstate 64, Interstate 295, U.S. Route 250, and Virginia Route 288. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, it has a population of 24,729 people, 6,483 families and 9,217 households. The per capita income of the area was $46,047.

Short Pump Town Center

Opened on September 4, 2003, the Short Pump Town Center is managed by Brookfield Properties Retail Inc. The open-air shopping mall offers two levels of retail space and includes 140 stores and services. Its anchors are Macy's, Dillard's, and Dick's Sporting Goods. In 2020, its other anchor, Nordstrom, made the decision to close its Short Pump location permanently. As of currently, there is still a vacant spot for the town center's fourth anchor.

Some of the stores and restaurants offered at the Short Pump Town Center are The Cheesecake Factory, Casa Del Barco - Short Pump Town Center, Build-A-Bear Workshop, Old Navy, Chick-fil-A, Crate and Barrel, Apple Short Pump Town Center, Rock Bottom Restaurant & brewery, Texas de Brazil, The Boathouse at Short Pump Town Center, L.L. Bean, J. Crew, Cold Stone Creamery, American Family Fitness, and many more.

Also located within the center's property, but not part of the mall, are smaller strip malls that provide more stores and dining options for residents. Two of these malls are Short Pump Commons and Downtown Short Pump. Another feature of the town center is the Hyatt House Richmon-West, where visitors to the area can rest and enjoy retail therapy right outside their front door.

Short Pump Park

Situated on Pump Road, Short Pump Park is just outside the southeast section of the Short Pump CDP. Open from dawn to dusk, the park provides recreational amenities like athletic fields and a playground. It also offers picnic facilities, spray fountains, and a dog park for your furry friends. Also featured at the Short Pump Park are a history wall and a 1920 two-room schoolhouse that has been restored.
