Summary of Waynesboro

Waynesboro is an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Once known as Teasville, the city is named after General Anthony Wayne for his victory in 1794 at the Battle of Fallen Timbers during the Northwest Indian War. It is the principal city of the Staunton-Waynesboro Metropolitan Statistical Area. During its early establishment, the city was a convenient stip for those who wanted to travel west because the major crossing for the Blue Ridge Mountains in the area, Jarmans Gap, was only six miles northeast of the town.

On January 8, 1801, the town of Waynesborough was recognized by the state of Virginia. In 1834, it was incorporated. A railroad tunnel was constructed in the mid-1800s through Rockfish Gap to establish it as the major crossing through the mountains between Charlottesville and Waynesboro. On March 2, 1865, it was the site of the last battle for Confederate Lt. General Jubal A. Early of the American Civil War. Lasting only 20 minutes, the Battle of Waynesboro was the last blow for the Confederate Army in the Shenandoah Valley.

After the war, the town became a junction of two rail lines: the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway and the Shenandoah Valley Railway (now the Norfolk and Western Railway). In 1890, the land to the east of Waynesboro was incorporated as the Town of Basic City. They competed with each other through their development. Nonetheless, the two towns were consolidated into one in 1923. In 1948, it officially became an independent city. As of 2010, the city has a population of 21,006. According to the United States Census Bureau, it has a total area of 15.2 square miles.
