Camp Spindrift Counselor Arrested For Child Sexual Abuse

A former YMCA Camp Spindrift counselor is facing charges of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 after being accused of sexually abusing a camper at the Cape Ann, Massachusetts summer camp, according to the Salem News.

Christopher Brayton-Tedesco, 28, was arrested on suspicion that he molested a child during the camp's annual overnight session, held between August 1 and August 3, but authorities now say that the incidents may have taken place in the counselor's apartment.

Brayton-Tedesco was arrested on August 31, 2018, when Gloucester authorities served a search warrant on his home. He has been charged with three counts of indecent assault and battery on a victim under 14, each of which carries a 10-year sentence in state prison.

Judge Cesar Archilla of the Gloucester District Court has ordered documents in the case impounded, which is common for cases involving the sexual abuse of a minor, but details were disclosed during a dangerousness hearing held on September 1, 2018.

Brayton-Tedesco Began Intimate Relationship At Cambridge Charter School

The evidence suggests that Brayton-Tedesco began an intimate relationship with a young boy while teaching at a charter school in the Boston area. Brayton-Tedesco "pushed" for the boy to attend YMCA Camp Spindrift, paying half of his camp tuition and picked the boy up regularly at his house to drive him to camp, the Gloucester Daily Times reports.

Video evidence shows the young boy and Brayton-Tedesco walking around nude in the camp counselor's apartment. Gloucester Police Lieutenant Michael Gossom testified in court that the incident occurred when the boy's mother believed he was at camp.

As evidence in the case, prosecutors have entered the aforementioned cellphone video and a recording of an interview conducted with members of the Essex County Child Abuse Prevention Project. The video documents an interview conducted with the victim.

Accused Counselor Fired Two Days After Allegations

Gloucester police authorities were tipped off to the case after being contacted by YMCA officials, who launched their own investigation after a counselor at the camp expressed his concerns. The witness told officials that Brayton-Tedesco's behavior had made him "uncomfortable and suspicious." Brayton-Tedesco was fired two days later.

Camp Admits To Breach Of Policy

While YMCA Camp Spindrift has a policy requiring that two adults be present when campers are transported, YMCA risk management director Darlene Moulton has acknowledged that this policy was not followed consistently in the case of Brayton-Tedesco.

A camp employee who was supposed to be a bus monitor for the man's trips with the camper admitted to Moulton that "she wasn't with him all the times[,] so we now know he was all alone with [the camper]."

Brayton-Tedesco Under House Arrest

Brayton-Tedesco has been released on a $3,000 bail, but must remain on house arrest with a GPS tracking system because he remains a danger to children, a Gloucester District Court judge ruled on September 11, 2018. He worked at Prospect Hill Academy Charter School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
