Description of Coeburn

Coeburn is a town situated along the Guest River. Part of Wise County, Virginia, it was originally named Guest Station for Christopher Gist, an explorer and surveyor. In 1894, when the town was incorporated, its name was changed to Coeburn after the Chief Engineer of the Norfolk and Western Railroad W. W. Coe and Judge W. E. Burns. According to the United States Census Bureau, Coeburn has a total area of 2.0 square miles made up of many mountains and hills. The main roads serving the town are U.S. Route 58 Alternative, Virginia Route 72 (Laurel Avenue), and Virginia Route 646 (Wise Mountain Road NW). As of the 2010 census, the population of Coeburn is 2,139 people.

Education

The Town of Coeburn is part of the Wise County Public Schools District. Families with children in the area are assigned to one of the following schools:

  • Coeburn Primary School
    • Coeburn Primary School is an above-average elementary school in the town. The fifth best public elementary school in Wise County, it has a population of 410 students from grades pre-Kindergarten through 4th.   • Coeburn Middle School
    • The middle school is the fourth-best public middle school in Wise County, according to Niche. It offers classes from grades 5 through 8 and has an enrollment of 340 students. Niche also gives it an overall grade of a B plus. GreatSchools gives it a 7 out of 10.
  • Eastside High School
    • Eastside High School can be found on Schoolhouse Hill Drive NE in Coeburn. The high school has a total population of 392 students in 9th through 12th grade. Spearhead Trail

Spearhead Trail is a park within the town of Coeburn. The park features wining ATV trails, hiking, biking, equestrian trails, birding trails, pump tracks, access points for kayaks, and many more.

Devil's Bathtub

Located 45 minutes by car from Coeburn is Devil's Bathtub. The natural swimming hole is a popular designation for residents and visitors to the area. Part of the Devil's Fork Look Trail in Duffield, the tourist attraction is perfect for backcountry enthusiasts who don't mind the two-mile hike and 13 river crossings to the swimming hole. The Devil's Bathtub has gained traction over the past year and is now listed on Reddit, Virginia.org, and The Weather Channel.
