Summary of Covington

Covington is the county seat of the county of Alleghany, Virginia. An independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, it is the third-least populous city of the state with only a population of 5,961 people as of the 2010 census. Along with Roanoke and Salem, the city is part of the Roanoake Regional Partnership. It was named after the War of 1812 hero General Leonard Covington, who was also a friend of James Madison and Thomas Jefferson.

Notable establishments in the district include Merry Stand, the James Burk House, Callaghan House, William W. Lawrence House, Covington Savings Bank, Rinehart Building, I. O. O. F. Building, Covington Post Office, Alleghany County Courthouse, Alleghany County Jail, Hotel Collins, Hippodrome Theater, C&O Railway and Freight Station, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, First Presbyterian Church and Covington Baptist Church.
  • First Baptist Church of Covington, Virginia
    • The historic African American Baptist church complex consists of two churches. One was built around 1890 of the Gothic Revival architectural style. The other was built in 1911 of the Gothic Revival and Colonial Revival styles.
  • Fudge House
    • The historic residence was built around 1798. In 1826, 1897 and 1910, additions and modifications were done to the log house. Today, it is a two-story weatherboarded home made out of log, frame and brick. Also located on the property is another house, a smokehouse, and the ruins of a slave cabin.
