The Town of Bridgewater

Bridgewater is an incorporated town in the county of Rockingham, Virginia. Part of the Harrison, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area, the town was first settled in 1746 by William Magill. Originally known as Magill's Ford, it was an area along the North River. As the first bridge across the river was built in 1820, the area grew to become known as Bridgeport. In February of 1835, the Virginia General Assembly gave the town its charter and incorporated it as Bridgewater.

As of the 2010 census, the town has a population of 5,644 people, of which there are 1,995 households and 1,278 families. Its total area is 2.4 square miles. Because Bridgewater is prone to flooding and has suffered from six major floods, the US Army Corps of Engineers has constructed a dam to protect a large portion of the town from future flooding.

Bridgewater College

Bridgewater College was established in 1880 as a private liberal arts college by Daniel Christian Flory. It was the first four-year liberal arts college in Virginia to admit men and women from the time it was founded. Originally named the Spring Creek Normal and Collegiate Institute, five of its older buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and included in the Bridgewater Historic District. The college has a population of approximately 1,800 undergraduate students and offers over 60 majors and minors.

Parks and Recreation

Bridgewater features 13 parks for residents and visitors to enjoy their time at. Taking up more than 99 acres of the town, these parks offer picnic shelters, riverwalks, fishing, playgrounds, fitness trails, basketball courts, golf courses and more.

The following list is some of the recreational parks in Bridgewater and their amenities:

  • Generations Park
    • Ice skating rink, event space, After Dark at Gen Park concert and movie series, and the Harris Concert series.
  • Sandy Bottom Par-3 and Mini-Golf
    • Par-3 nine-hole golf course, 18-hole miniature golf course, practice green, picnic tables, two gazebos, and restrooms.
  • Oakdale Park
    • The busiest park in town; it is home to the Summer's End Celebration, North River Library, Bridgewater Little League Program, three picnic areas, BBQ grills, water spigots, a basketball court, two playgrounds, four horseshoe pits, and open recreational space.

The other 10 parks of the Town of Bridgewater are Bridgewater Park, Seven Bridges, Edgebriar Park, Wildwood Park, Wynant Park, Bird Sanctuary, Dinkel-Harrist Gateway at Warm Springs Turnpike Park, Cooks Creek Arboretum, Harrison Park and Whitelow Park.

Sipe Center

Another way the Town of Bridgewater provides recreation for the residents in the area is through the Sipe Center. Opened in November 2019, it is a state-of-the-art movie theater and performing arts center. Located on the corner of North Main Street and West College Street, the center hosts two live performances monthly. This includes Shakespeare plays, live music and magic shows. It is also where the town holds its council meetings.
