Overview of San Tan Valley

San Tan Valley is a census-designated place (CDP) in the northern portion of Pinal County, Arizona. Its name is derived from the nearby San Tan Mountains; however, its origin is not known. The area was previously known as the following:

  • San Tan Heights
  • San Tan Foothills
  • Greater San Tan
  • The San Tan Area

It wasn't until 2009 when the community got an official name. During the addition of a new ZIP code, the United States Postal Service was asked to provide a new name for the area. A non-binding vote was organized in the community to give residents an opportunity to vote on the name.

Since 2000, the area has been steadily growing from the undeveloped desert and agriculture it was prior. Attempts to incorporate San Tan Valley have been in the works. This was very evident in 2009 when the area got its own name. However, concerns of state shared revenues and urbanization prompted the Town Council of Florence to repeatedly vote against the incorporation of San Tan Valley.

Today, the unincorporated area is bounded by the town of Queens Creek on the north and west, the San Tan Mountains Regional Park on the west, the Gilia River Indian Community on the southwest, the town of Florence on the south, and more unincorporated land of the county to the east. As of 2020, the population for San Tan Valley is 96,692.
