What do you know about Sierra Vista? The sexual assault lawyers of Sierra Vista presents to you this informative article about the city in hopes that you learn more about its history.

Sierra Vista: From Past to Present

Sierra Vista is a city that serves as part of the Sierra Vista-Douglas Metropolitan Area. Part of Cochise County, it is also the main commercial, cultural and recreational hub for the county. Over 11,000 years ago, Paleo-Indians and animals like mammoths, tapirs, bison, horses and camels occupied the area. In 1854, it was part of the Gadsden Purchase. In 1877, Camp Huachuca was founded. With the protection of the fort and the development of the El Paso & Southwestern and Southern Pacific railroads, American settlers began to populate the area after the Apache Wars in 1886.

In 1892, a saloon and "house of ill repute" opened up just outside the east gate of Fort Huachuca. Owned by John and Ellen Reilly, it was the first business in the area. However, the Reilly homestead and business were purchased by Margaret Carmichael and leased back to the Reillys. By 1913, other small settlements were created around the area. In January of 1913, Oliver Fry and his two sons settled just east of the fort. The Overton Post Office was established in 1917. Named after the Overton Merchantile and Investment Company, it was the company's initiative in trying to develop a town outside of Fort Huachuca. When that failed, the Carmichaels took back their property, renamed their post office Garden Canyon, opened the Garden Canyon store, and constructed 18 stone houses on Garden Avenue.

From 1927 to 1938, the Carmichael store was rented by the Frys. They were also responsible for the operations of the post office. In 1938, the Frys established the first federally recognized post office in the area. Thus, the settlement's name was changed to Fry. In 1955, the first attempt was named to incorporate Garden Canyon, Buena and Fry Town. However, Fry refused to incorporate and rename the town that bore his family name. On May 26, 1956, the areas of Buena, Garden Canyon/Overton and parts of Fry were incorporated as the Town of Sierra Vista.

In 1961, Sierra Vista was incorporated as a city. Ten years later, it annexed Fort Huachuca and the adjacent community. The city was the site of the first McDonald's drive-thru owned by Dave Rich in 1975. Historical names that it has been known as include:

  • Papingo in 1878
  • Overton in 1898
  • Garden Canyon in 1909
  • Buena in 1915
  • Fry, Fry Settlement, Frytown, and Fry Township in 1938
  • "The White City," "The Hook" and "Green Top" from 1942 to 1945
  • Town of Sierra Vista in 1955
  • City of Sierra Vista in 1961

Sierra Vista is a Spanish word meaning "mountain view." As of the 2010 census, it has a population of 43,888 people.
