Boston Acupuncturist Faced Previous Claims Of Misconduct
This is not the first time Qunhao "John" Zhang has been accused of inappropriate conduct. In two previous complaints, other women claimed Zhang committed misconduct during acupuncture sessions. In one of the complaints, a woman, who described herself as unfamiliar with acupuncture, accused Zhang of making inappropriate comments and massaging her neck and touching her breasts and crotch. "He then began to massage my neck," she said, "which proceeded to him putting his hands on my breasts. Additionally, he put his hands on my crotch and applied pressure."
In state documents, Zhang responded to the allegations and dismissed the allegations as a misunderstanding," saying, "I never touched her breasts, let alone nipple or crotch. I did push her hair aside to expose Fengchi points on both sides of her neck." He denied touching the woman inappropriately, writing, "I blame myself for not explaining or educating her in greater detail."
After an investigation of the allegations, the Board of Registry in Medicine decided that no disciplinary action was necessary, instead sending Zhang a "letter of advice" that counseled the acupuncturist to communicate more clearly with his clients about his treatment methods. The letter also outlined exactly what measures would be taken in light of similar incidents in the future.
Qunhao Zhang was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, entering a plea of not guilty. He was released on his recognizance into the community. In statements to the court, prosecutors provided more details as to the most recent allegations against Zhang, saying the woman has accused him of giving her an unsolicited massage and groping her from behind. He was scheduled to appear in court again on April 9.
