Thoroughgood is a neighborhood in the northern portion of the City of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Located at the geographical coordinates of 36.8918 degrees north latitude and 76.1291 degrees west longitude, it is in the vicinity of the communities of Bayside, Smith Lake Terrace, and Chic's Beach. Witch Duck Bay bounds the east side of the neighborhood. The main roads serving the area are Pleasure House Road, Independence Boulevard (Virginia Route 225), First Court Road, and Northampton Boulevard (U.S. Route 13). Real estate in Thoroughgood can range from $300,000 to $2 million.
Thoroughgood Elementary School is the designated elementary school for families with children in Thoroughgood. Part of the Virginia Beach City Public Schools System, it is situated within the neighborhood on Dunstan Lane. The school has a population of 688 students from grades pre-Kindergarten through 5th. There is a student-to-teacher ratio of 20 to 1. Based on state standardized test scores, 90% of its students are proficient in reading and 91% are in math. The Thoroughgood House is a history museum on Parish Road. Offering a glimpse into the colonial life of Thoroughgood and Virginia Beach, the museum is open to the public for free. Its hours of operations are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The museum is closed Mondays through Wednesdays.
Built around 1719 by Argall Thorowgood, the Thoroughgood House is one of the oldest colonial homes in Virginia Beach that's still surviving. On October 9, 1960, the brick home was designated as a National Historic Landmark (NHL). On October 15, 1966, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Three years later, the house was designated on the Virginia Landmarks Register (VLR). In 2003, the property was acquired by the City of Virginia Beach. After much restoration, it now features the Thoroughgood House, Thoroughgood House Education Center and an English garden.
