Get To Know Massanutten

Massanutten is a census-designated place (CDP) in the county of Rockingham, Virginia. Part of the Harrisonburg Metropolitan Statistical Area, it was built around a ski resort in the valley at the southern end of the Massanutten Mountain. The first European-American to settle in the area was German colonist Adam Miller. According to the United States Census Bureau, Massanutten has a total area of 14.3 square miles. As of the 2010 census, it has a population of 2,291 people.

In 1875, farmer Gerald T. Hopkins established a health spa from the natural springs of the area. The three-story Rockingham Springs Hotel was built near the family's Hunters Cabin. However, the hotel closed down in 1915 after the popularity of the health resorts declined. In 1973, John L. Hopkins, the great-grandson of G.T. Hopkins, chartered the Massanutten Development Corporation with the help of Leland Leachman, Donald Litten, and Len LaSala of the Del Webb Corporation. The ski resort was built. However, by 1977, it was purchased by Dale Stancil for $1.9 million. He subsequently renamed it the Massanutten Village. In 1980, it was acquired by John Swaim of First Federal Corporation. Currently, the owner of the resort is Great Eastern Resorts, who got it in 1984 for $3.0 million.

Hopkins Park

Hopkins Park is situated on Massanutten Drive just to the left of the Massanutten Resort. Home of the Hunters Cabin, it offers visitors a scenic and tranquil place to hang out and relax.
