Former Santa Barbara California Teacher Facing Allegation of Sexually Abusing Students

According to the Santa Barbara Independent, a former teacher faces allegations of sexually abusing students at Cate School located at 1960 Cate Mesa Rd, Carpinteria, CA 93013.

Police are investigating allegations against 27-year-old Da’Jon Tyrik James, a former music teacher at the private high school. James was employed at the school for only six months before he was fired in February 2020.

A warrant was served to the Cate School campus in June 2021, and the investigation is still ongoing. Detectives have already identified many of his alleged victims, both former and currently enrolled students at the Cate School.

James is also facing charges of sexually abusing four students while employed as a teacher at a Boulder Colorado school that he is currently employed at. He has since been arrested on charges that include inappropriate language,  fondling, prolonged hugging, inappropriate kissing on the forehead, and inappropriate complimenting. The four victims also allege that the suspect used inappropriate language while with them and showed them sexually explicit imagery.

Legal Rights of Victims of Sexual Abuse in Schools

Attorney contributor Bobby Thompson, an experienced sexual abuse attorney, represents victims of sexual abuse in civil lawsuits. Bobby has provided insight on the legal options of victims sexually abused by a teacher

“Teachers and school staff should do everything in their power to provide a safe learning environment for the students. Parents and guardians trust that when they send their children to school each day, they are protected by the school employees. Unfortunately, sexual predators often gain positions in schools in order to take advantage of their positions of power and trust to sexually abuse students. Schools should maintain adequate security measures to ensure the safety of their students. Some examples include background checks, security cameras, and an easy reporting system."

“If a school fails to maintain proper security measures and a crime takes place, the school may be considered liable. When sexual assault takes place, it is often the result of the negligence of a third party, such as an employee. When a school does not provide adequate security, it may be considered liable due to neglect. Victims that a teacher has sexually abused should employ the counsel of an experienced sexual abuse attorney to prove that negligence has taken place.”
