Justice in Maryland
You can pursue justice in Maryland, and the law is now on your side
If you were sexually abused in Maryland, you have the right to hold the person who harmed you and the institution that enabled it accountable in civil court. Thanks to the Maryland Child Victims Act of 2023, survivors of childhood sexual abuse can now file claims that the old deadlines once shut out, including cases from decades ago.
A civil case is about you, on your terms. It can recover the cost of therapy, lost income, and the harm done to your life, while sending a clear message that what happened was not your fault. You decide how far to take it, and a Maryland sexual abuse lawyer guides each step so you never have to face the process alone.
Time limits do apply, and they vary by state. Many states have recently expanded or reopened the window to file. A free, confidential call simply tells you where you stand — no pressure, no obligation.

Deadlines in Maryland
Maryland's statute of limitations for sexual abuse claims
For childhood sexual abuse, Maryland has removed the civil statute of limitations entirely. Under the Maryland Child Victims Act of 2023, which took effect on October 1, 2023, survivors abused as minors can file civil claims at any time, regardless of how long ago the abuse occurred. Here is how the framework breaks down:
- Child sexual abuse (abused while a minor): No civil statute of limitations. You may bring a claim no matter your current age or when the abuse happened.
- Claims against institutions: The Act allows claims against schools, religious organizations, and other entities that knew or should have known about the abuse, subject to damage caps the legislature set and later revised in 2025.
- Adult sexual assault: Civil claims by adults generally follow Maryland's standard personal-injury deadline, which is shorter, so it is important to ask promptly how the timeline applies to your facts.
- Criminal vs. civil: A civil case is separate from any criminal case and can move forward even if no criminal charges were ever filed.
Because the 2023 Act and the 2025 amendments changed both deadlines and damage rules, the safest step is a confidential conversation about your specific situation before assuming any window has closed.
This is general information, not legal advice; deadlines depend on the facts of each case.

Maryland answers
Common questions from Maryland survivors
Can I still file a sexual abuse claim in Maryland if the abuse happened years ago?
Yes. For abuse that occurred while you were a minor, the Maryland Child Victims Act of 2023 removed the civil statute of limitations, so there is no deadline based on how long ago it happened. A short, confidential call can confirm how the law applies to your specific situation.
Can I sue a school, church, or other institution in Maryland?
Often, yes. Maryland law allows civil claims against schools, religious organizations, and other institutions that knew or should have known about abuse and failed to protect you. The legislature set damage caps for these claims, which were revised in 2025, so the specifics depend on your case.
What is the Maryland Child Victims Act of 2023?
The Child Victims Act, effective October 1, 2023, eliminated the civil statute of limitations for childhood sexual abuse in Maryland. It lets survivors bring claims against abusers and the institutions that enabled them, regardless of how much time has passed since the abuse.
How much does it cost to talk to a Maryland sexual abuse lawyer?
The initial conversation is free and confidential. Sexual abuse cases are typically handled on a contingency basis, meaning you pay no attorney fee unless your case results in a recovery. You can ask about costs clearly before deciding anything.
Will my Maryland case be kept confidential?
Your first contact goes privately to our Maryland intake team, not a public record. We move at your pace, share information only as needed to help your case, and discuss privacy protections, including how settlements can be handled discreetly, before you commit to anything.
Will I have to testify in court in Maryland?
Many sexual abuse cases resolve through settlement without a trial, so testifying is often not required. If your case does proceed further, your attorney prepares you fully and supports you through every step so you are never caught off guard.
Do I need to have reported the abuse to the police?
No. A civil claim is separate from the criminal system, and you can pursue it whether or not you ever filed a police report or charges were brought. Many Maryland survivors come forward years later, and that does not bar a civil case.
What areas of Maryland do you serve?
Our partner attorney serves survivors across Maryland, including Silver Spring, Baltimore, Frederick, Annapolis, Ellicott City, College Park, Hagerstown, and the greater Montgomery County region. Wherever in the state the abuse occurred, we can help you take the next step.
