Mayfair is a neighborhood in the northeastern part of Philadelphia. It is bordered by Pennypack Park to the north, Holmesburg to the east, Tacony and Wissinoming to the south and east, and Oxford Circle and Rhawnhurst to the west. The area consisted of farmland and was home to The Edwin Forrest Home for Children and The Oxford and Lower Dublin Poo House before it was developed in the 1920s.
Established in 1929, Mayfair is a community that provides a fresher and more spacious living experience in an urban environment. It wasn't until after World War II that the neighborhood came to fruition. As a forerunner to American suburbanization, it served to connect other surrounding neighborhoods of the Northeast. Mayfair also featured a number of groundbreaking concepts for city dwellers. This included bigger rowhomes with parking garages in the back and yards in the front.
The neighborhood has always been historically populated by Irish Americans. However, recently, an increase in the Asian American population has been evident. As of the 2010 census, the population of the neighborhood is 38,202 people.
