About Surprise

Surprise is a city in the county of Maricopa, Arizona. It is the second-fasting-growing municipality in the greater metropolitan area of Phoenix. The city was established by Flora Mae Statler in 1938. She named it Surprise for how surprised she'd be if the town amounted to anything. Initially only one square mile with a few houses and a gas station, the area has gone through tremendous growth over the years.

In 1960, Surprise was incorporated as a city. Surprise is bound by Bell Road on the north, El Mirage Road on the east, Greenway Road on the south and Dysart Road on the west. In the 1990s and early 2000s, relocated to the city to live in the age-restricted resort community Sun City Grand. Developed by property development firm Del Webb, the community is a large contributor to the growth in the city's population. As of the 2019 census, its population is estimated to be 141,664 people. This is more than four times the population it had in 2000, which was at 30,848 people.
