The City of Goshen

Goshen is one of the principal cities of the Elkhart-Goshen Metropolitan Statistical Area. Also the county seat of Elkhart County, it is located in the northern portion of Indiana in the Michiana region. Before the area was colonized, it was inhabited by the Peoria people, the Miami people and the Potawatomi people for thousands of years.

After the U.S. Congress passed the Indian Removal Act in 1831, Goshen was platted the following year. Named after the Land of Goshen, the original settlers to the area were old stock "Yankee" immigrants from the overpopulated New England who deemed themselves the "chosen people." In 1833, the Treaty of Chicago was signed, which forced the Potawatomi to leave the Midwest in what is known today as the 1838 Potawatomi Trail of Death. Today, the city is a major recreational vehicle and accessories manufacturing center.
