Cottonwood is a city located at the coordinates of 34.7321 degrees north latitude and 112.0186 degrees west longitude. Part of Yavapai County, Arizona, it is the economic heart of the Verde Valley and is the epicenter of the Verde Valley wine region of Arizona. The city has become known as the "Heart of Arizona Wine Country." It lies within the proximity of Clarkdale, Jerome, Cherry, Campe Verde, and Cornville. The main roads serving the area are Arizona State Road 89A, Arizona State Road 260, Main Street and East Mingus Avenue. As of the 2019 census estimate, Cottonwood has a population of 12,253 people. The city is named for the cottonwood tree that grows along the Verde River.

Old Town Cottonwood is a shopping district in Cottonwood. A popular tourist attraction for the area, it is home to more than 60 businesses. This includes:

Dead Horse Ranch State Park

Dead Horse Ranch State Park is a national state park on the Verde River. It once belonged to the Ireys family of Minnesota, who moved to the area in the late 1940s. After viewing ranches for two days, the children of the family liked the one with the dead horse the best. Thus, the Dead Horse Ranch name came to be. In 1973, the Arizona State Park acquired the park with the condition that the name remained the same.

The 423-acre state park provides recreational activities such as hiking along the Verde River, fishing, canoeing, swimming, picnicking, mountain biking in the Coconino National Forest and camping. Visitors also have the opportunity to view its wildlife. The park is home to mammals like White-tailed Deer, Cottontail Rabbit, Jackrabbit, Coyote, Gray Fox, Bobcat, Mountain Lions, and a variety of birds, reptiles, amphibians and plants. It is open every day from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Established in 2009, the Verde Valley Wine Trail offers visitors a chance to experience the rich history, beauty and production of exquisite Arizona wines. Situated along the trail are various wineries and tasting rooms. Each winery is different from the next and is skillfully crafted to suit any wine taster's palate.
