Cottonwood is a city located at the coordinates of 34.7321 degrees north latitude and 112.0186 degrees west longitude. Dead Horse Ranch State Park is a national state park on the Verde River. It once belonged to the Ireys family of Minnesota, who moved to the area in the late 1940s. After viewing ranches for two days, the children of the family liked the one with the dead horse the best. Thus, the Dead Horse Ranch name came to be. In 1973, the Arizona State Park acquired the park with the condition that the name remained the same.
The 423-acre state park provides recreational activities such as hiking along the Verde River, fishing, canoeing, swimming, picnicking, mountain biking in the Coconino National Forest and camping. Visitors also have the opportunity to view its wildlife.
