Morenci is a company town and census-designated place (CDP) in Greenlee County, Arizona. Founded by the Detroit Copper Mining Company of Arizona, it is owned by Freeport-McMoRan – the biggest employer in the town and the owner of the Morenci Mine. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP of Morenci has a total area of 0.98 square miles. The town lies west of Clifton and is served by U.S. Route 191 (Coronado Trail). As of the 2000 census, it has a population of 1,879 people.

Morenci Mine

Morenci Mine is the largest copper mining operation in North America and among one of the largest copper mines worldwide. It has been estimated to reserve around 3.2 billion tonnes of ore grading 0.16% copper. In 2016, copper production at the mine was 848 million pounds. In 2017, this decreased to 737 million pounds. The economy of Morenci and its surrounding areas are dependent on the mine. Approximate 4,000 people are employed there.
