Monroe Ward is a historic neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia. Located in Downtown Richmond, it is just southeast of The Fan District. The area is bounded by North and South Belvidere Streets on the west and northwest, East Broad Street on the northeast, North 2nd Street on the east, South 4th Street on the southeast, and Downtown Expressway (Virginia Route 195) on the south and southwest. The neighborhood is surrounded by the communities of Gamble Hill, Central Office District, City CenterJackson Ward, Gilpin, Chamberlayne Industrial Center, Carver, and Oregon Hill.

Monroe Ward has a population of 7,860 people. Because the neighborhood sits adjacent to Virginia Commonwealth University, several of the housings in the area are occupied by students or college professionals. 93% of its residents rent their homes. The median rent price for Monroe Ward is $1,222. The average home value is $334,069.

Ellen Glasgow House

Ellen Glasgow House is a historic house in Monroe Ward. Situated on West Main Street, the two-story stuccoed brick home was built in 1841 by David Branch and is of the Greek Revival architectural style. The house became a nationally significant landmark because it was the home of American novelist Ellen Glasgow – a Pulitzer Prize winner for her 1941 In This Our Life.

The property also includes a backyard garden and The Carriage House Gallery. The gallery features exhibits by local Richmond artists, like pinhole photographer Willie Anne Wright. On November 11, 1971, the Ellen Glasgow House was designated as a National Historic Landmark (NHL). In 1972, it was designated on the Virginia Landmarks Register (VLR) and listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
