Summary of San Luis

San Luis is a city within Yuma County, Arizona. Part of the Yuma Metropolitan Statistical Area, it is located adjacent to Mexico's Federal Highway 2 at San Luis Rio Colorado and is bordered by the Mexico and U.S. country line on its southeast, south, southwest and west sides. The city was founded in 1930 because of the opening of a border-crossing station. In 1979, it was incorporated as the City of San Luis. From 2006 to 2016, the city annexed more than 16,000 acres of land, thus increasing the opportunity for residential, commercial and industrial growth. As of the 2019 census estimate, San Luis has a population of 34,778 people and has a total area of 26.5 square miles. Between 1990 and 2000, it was the fastest-growing city in Arizona.

Cocopah Museum and Cultural Center

The Cocopah Museum and Cultural Center was constructed in 1996 and featured exhibits on the history and culture of the Cocopah Indian Tribe. The recognized federal repository is situated on the West Cocopah Reservation and is surrounded by a 1.5-acre park. Visitors to the museum can view examples of the tribe's traditional clothing, pottery, traditional tattoo designs,  modern-day beadwork, musical instruments, and the Cocopah warriors' display. The gift shop also offers Native arts and crafts, music, novelty items, jewelry, and authentic Cocopah beadwork for purchase. The museum and cultural center is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Arizona State Prison Complex – Yuma is among one of the 13 prison facilities that are operated by the Arizona Department of Corrections. Located in San Luis on East Cesar Chavez Boulevard, it was opened in 1987 with a 250-bed minimum-security facility called the Cocopah Unit. In November 1995, it became its own prison complex. That same year, the Cheyenne Unit was constructed. In 1997, the Dakota Unit was also built. Today, the ASPC - Yuma has a capacity of 4,200 inmates. Its custody levels are two, three and four, respectively.
