Summary of Shipshewana

Shipshewana is a town in the Newbury Township of LaGrange County, Indiana. It was named after Potawatomi Indian, who was local to the area. In 1889, the first post office – the Shipshewana post office – was established. As of 2010, the town has a population of 658 people and a total area of 1.18 square miles. The main roads serving the area are Van Buren Street (Indiana State Road 5), West 250 North, West 200 North, and U.S. Route 20.

The town of Shipshewana is at the heart of the Amish country in Indiana. It and LaGrange County are a one-of-a-kind designation that allows visitors to experience the simplicity of Amish life and culture.

Menno-Hof Amish & Mennonite Museum

The Menno-Hof Amish & Mennonite Museum is the perfect beginning point for visitors exploring the Amish country. Built by Amish and Mennonite craftsmen, the complex is centered on mid-park-like grounds. Through historical environments, multimedia presentations and colorful displays, visitors can see and hear the Amish-Mennonite story and journey inside its unique world. The museum includes:

  • A 1600s sailing ship
  • Replicas of an 1800s print shop
  • A "Reconciling in Christ" display
  • Re-enactment of the first adult baptism in the courtyard
  • Amish home
  • Meeting house
  • Tornado simulation

There are educational tours that feature hands-on activities for visitors of all ages. The gift shop also sells a variety of hand-crafted items created by local Amish and Mennonites. The museum is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours are available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission fees are $7.50 for adults, $16 for families with two adults and children six years of age to 14, and $6.50 per person for groups of 25 people or more. The museum can be found on South Van Buren Street in Shipshewana.

Shipshewana Auction & Flea Market

The Shipshewana Auction & Flea Market is an open-air flea market and auction in Shipshewana. Located across the street from the Menno-Hof Amish & Mennonite Museum, it has been serving buyers and sellers from all over the U.S. since 1922. The three auctions that run every week on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. are the Antique & Miscellaneous Auction, Livestock Auction and Horse Auction.

From May through September, the grounds also host an open door flea market. Encompassing over 40 acres of land, it is the largest flea market in the Midwest. The market feature over 700 vendors and sell products like:

  • Clothing
  • Crafts
  • Home decor
  • Beauty supplies
  • Vintage items
  • Tools
  • Books
  • Plants
  • Produce
  • Accessories
  • Amish food

Visitors can buy anything they could imagine at the flea market, and most times, get them for a nice bargain. The Shipshewana Flea Market is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
