Haddington is a neighborhood within the West Philadephia section of Philadephia, Pennsylvania. It is bordered by Haverford Avenue and Girard Avenue on the north, 52nd Street on the east, Market Street on the south and 67th Sreet on the west. The neighborhood has a population of 22,583 people and is mainly racially made up of African Americans. It features primarily two-story rowhouses, and 56% of its residents rent their homes. The Haddington Historic District is a national historic district in the neighborhood of Haddington. Located on the 6000 blocks of Chestnut Street, Ludlow Street and Market Street, it encompasses Colonial, Classical Revival and Spanish Revival architectural styles buildings built from 1909 to 1915. On September 29m 1988, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
George L. Brooks School is a former school building on Wyalusing Avenue in Haddington. Designed by Henry deCourcy Richards, it was constructed in 1919 and includes part of the original walls from the 1902 edifice that was destroyed previously by a fire. The three-story, five-bay, stone and brick historic building is of the Late Gothic Revival architectural style. On December 4, 1986, it was listed on the NRHP. Today, it serves as senior housing.
Thomas Dunlap School is another historic former school building in Haddington. Situated on Race Street, it was designed by Lloyd Titus – the designer of the 1902 edifice – and built by the Lynch Bros. in 1905. The three-story, nine-by-two-bay, ashlar stone building is of the Colonial Revival style. On December 4, 1986, it was added to the NRHP. The historic building is currently used as apartments.
The Shepard Recreation Center is an 8.2-acre recreational space in Haddington. It is part of the City of Philadelphia's Rebuild project led by Nicetown CDC. Catering to the residents of the neighborhood, it features:
The center also includes a recreational building that offers a public computing center, a youth athletics program, a boxing gym, and a variety of activities for families and young people. It is open Mondays through Fridays from 1 to 9 p.m. On Saturdays, it is also open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
