Synopsis of State College

The home rule municipality of State College is located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Part of Centre County, it is the largest designated borough in the state and the principal borough of the six municipalities in the State College area. The borough is also the largest settlement in Centre County and one of the principal cities of the State Collge-DuBois Combined Statistical Area.

State College was once a village in PA. However, to serve Pennsylvania State College, it evolved into a town. On August 29, 1896, the town of State College was incorporated as a borough. In 1973, the borough adopted a home role charter and was no longer governed by the Borough Code of the state. As of 2010, the borough has a population of 42,034 people.

Pennsylvania State University

Pennsylvania State University or Penn State was founded as the Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania in 1855. The public state-related land-grant university is a major research institution. It is one of the only four universities, along with Oregon State University, Cornell University and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, that participates in the space-grant, sun-grant and sea-grant research consortia. Its largest campus, the University Park campus, is located in the Borough of State College and College Township.

Labeled among one of the "Public Ivies," the University Park campus enrolls over 46,8000 undergraduate and graduate students per year. It is among one of the largest universities in the U.S. The university is home to 18 academic colleges, offers over 160 majors, and includes 24 campuses. It is also the host of the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, the annual Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON).

Old Main

Old Main is a historical building constructed in 1867. Designed by Hugh McAllister, it featured classrooms, offices, laboratories, residential space and a chapel. However, it was razed and rebuilt in 1929 and 1930, respectively, after being deemed structurally unsafe in the 1920s. The new building was designed by architect Charles Klauder and incorporated some of the old buildings' limestone. Constructed in the Federal Revival architectural style, it includes four floors and one clock tower. The building serves as the administrative center for Penn State. Old Main has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1981. It is part of the Farmers' High School Historic District.
