Franklin College was established in 1834 as Indiana Baptist Manual-Labor Institute. Affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA, the previous manual labor college is now a private liberal arts college spanning 207 acres. It offers Bachelor of Arts degrees for 49 majors in 23 academic disciplines, 43 minors, 11 pre-professional programs, five cooperative programs, and two Master of Science in Athletic Training and Physician Assistant Studies. In 1842, the college became the first coeducation institution in the state and the seventh in the nation as it began admitting women.
Situated to the west of Franklin College is the Blue Heron Park and Wetlands on Driftwood Court. Like most parks in the state, Blue Heron Park feature an assortment of playgrounds, picnic shelters, open fields and nature areas. However, what makes the 55 acres park unique is its natural wetlands. Visitors can take the opportunity to get away from city life as they take in the tranquil beauty of the park, along with its wildlife, plants and ecological benefits.
Another feature of the Blue Heron Park and Wetlands is the Blue Heron Challenge Course. It provides a great team-building exercise for school, work, church, athletic teams, family and friends. Professionally lead by a facilitation team, the program offers experiential learning and leadership training through its 33 element low ropes course. If that's not something you like, the park is also home to a disc golf course. The Historic Franklin Greenway Trail also runs through it.
