Short History of Camp Hill

Camp Hill is a borough in the Cumberland County of Pennsylvania. Part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area, it is bordered by the East Pennsboro Township to the north, the borough of Lemoyne to the east, the Lower Allen census-designated place (CDP) of the Lower Allen Township to the south, and the Hampden Township to the west. It is said that the name "Camp Hill" came from a split in the Peace Church's congregation when one part of the church started to meet outdoor on a hill. Before the American Civil War, the area was known as White Hill. It was a stop between Harrisburg and Carlisle, along the Cumberland Valley Railroad. In late June 1863 of the Civil War, the Battle of Sporting Hill of the Gettysburg Campaign took place at Camp Hill.

On November 10, 1885, the borough of Camp Hill was incorporated. As of the 2010 census, it has a population of 7,888 people and a total area of 2.1 square miles. The main roads that serve the area are Cumberland Boulevard (U.S. Route 11), South 32nd Street (U.S. Route 15), Harrisburg Expressway (Pennsylvania State Road 581), and Market Street.
