Gilbert is the fifth-largest municipality in the metropolitan area of Phoenix and the sixth-largest in Arizona. A town in Maricopa County, it was established by William "Bobby" Gilbert. The area saw its first store in 1910. The building would go on to become Gilbert's first post office in 1912. That same year, many Mormons who fled the Mormon colonies in Mexico because of the forces of Pancho Villa moved into Gilbert.
When the town was incorporated in July 1920, it was a farming community featuring the Arizona Eastern Railway rail line – William Gilbert had given land to the railway in 1902 to build a rail line from Phoenix to Florence, AZ – the Roosevelt Dam, and the Eastern and Consolidated Canals. From 1911 to the late 1920s, Gilbert was known as the "Hay Capital of the World." The once agricultural town was ranked the seventh-best place to raise a family in the U.S. in 2019. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of 243,254 people. Gilbert is the largest incorporated town in the U.S.

The Gilbert Elementary School is another historical establishment of the town. It has been added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and is now the home of the Gilbert Historical Museum.

Located on South Power Road, the Desert Sky Park was developed in 2019. Operated by the Gilbert Department of Parks and Recreation, it is open to residents and visitors daily from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. It offers park amenities such as four multipurpose filed, a fitness course, a lake, a kids playground, ramadas, and restroom facilities. Plans are in the works to expand the park to include 12 more collegiate size multi-use fields, a sensory playground, plaza areas, trailhead and parking.
Another park that was established in 2019 is the Gilbert Regional Park. Situated on East Queen Creek Road, it is also open every day from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is managed by the town's department of parks and recreation. It features basketball courts, pickleball courts, sand volleyball courts, tennis courts, an amphitheater, an event lawn, food truck alley, group ramada, a 7-acre lake, a one-mile walking path, and the play areas of The Mountain, The Falls and The Creek. The Falls is a 4,000-square-foot splash pad that provides 57 interactive water features. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The other water park attraction in Gilbert Regional Park is the state-of-the-art The Strand @ Gilbert. Offering 25 acres of recreational water activities for visitors of all ages, the facility includes amenities like the Cable Wake Park, Surf Lagoon, Inflatable Water Park, Sand Beach, Water Saftey and Conservation Education, Outdoor Cabanas Areas, Indoor Pary Rooms, Indoor Arcade, Inflatable Play Structure, Kids Play Area, Gift Shop, Floating Tubes, Lessons, Kayak, Canoes and Paddleboards, Yoga Courses, Swimming Areas, Video Boards, Music, Restaurant, Rentable Lockers, and Restrooms.
