Description of Monroeville

Monroeville is a municipality with home rule status in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The borough is a suburb of Pittsburgh with mixed commercial and residential developments. The area was first settled in the mid to late-1700s. In 1849, it was incorporated as Patton Township. On January 25, 1951, Patton Township became the borough of Monroeville – it was named after the first postmaster in the area, Joel Monroe. On May 21, 1974, the borough was given the home rule status.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Monroeville has a total area of 19.8 square miles. It has a population of 28,640 people as of the 2020 census. The borough is bordered by:

  • Plum on the north
  • Murrysville on the east
  • Penn Township on the southeast
  • Trafford on the south
  • North Versailles, Turtle Creek and Wilmerding on the southwest
  • Wilkins Township on the west
  • Penn Hills on the northwest

Monroeville is located at the geographical coordinates of 40.431111 degrees north latitude and 79.765278 degrees west longitude. The main roads serving the area are Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76), William Penn Highway (Interstate 376 and U.S. Route 22), and William Penn Highway (U.S. Route 22 Business).

Monroeville Mall

Monroeville Mall is the largest shopping complex in Western Pennsylvania, with 1,418,700 square feet of leaseable retail space. Located on Mall Circle Drive, it is situated near the Monroeville interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the junction of I-376. The mall is most notable for being the filming location of the horror film  Dawn of the Dead (1978) by George A. Romero.

One of two malls owned by CBL Properties in the Pittsburgh area, it is home to 115 stores and services and six anchors. Some of the tenants of the mall are DICK'S Sporting Goods, Cinemark Monroeville Mall and XD, Macy's, H&M, Barnes & Nobles, JCPenney, The Living Dead Museum & Gift Shop, Party City, Pearl of the Orient, T-Mobile, WW (Weight Watchers), Gloria Jean's Coffees Monroeville Mall, Femi, Finish Line, Journeys, Clutch, Champs Sports, News Corner Store, Dakota Watch Company, Flamers, Bourbon Street Cafe, Saga Hibachi Steakhouse & Sushi Bar, Hair City Inc, Philip Pelusi Monroeville, Remo Menswear, and many more.

Monroeville Community Park West

Monroeville Community Park West is owned and managed by the Monroeville Recreation and Parks Department. Providing a sports and recreational space for residents and visitors to the borough, it features park amenities like:

  • Four pavilions
  • A playground with slides and swings
  • One baseball field
  • Two basketball courts
  • Two tennis courts
  • One soccer field
  • Bleachers
  • Paved paths
  • Hiking trails
  • Volleyball

All the pavilions in the park offer charcoal grills, tot lot, volleyball courts, pavilion ball field, playground equipment, horseshoe pits, tennis courts, electricity and restrooms. Two of the pavilion provide seating areas for 250 people. The other two provide seating areas for 125 people. Each one has 100 parking spaces. The park is located on Tilbrook Road and opens daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
