Glendale: From Past to Present

Glendale is a city in the county of Maricopa, Arizona. Prior to the late 1800s, the area that is now Glendale was all desert. The Arizona Canal Company had commissioned William John Murphy – a native of New Hartford, New York, who was living in the town of Flagstaff – to build a 40-mile long canal from Granite Reef to New River, bringing water to the desert land. When Murphy completed the canal in 1885, he had become in debt because he agreed to be paid with stock and bonds of the Arizona Canal Company and land.

So, he decided to form the Arizona Improvement Company in 1887 to sell the land and water rights that were south of the canal. Calling the area Glendale, he also created Grand Avenue – an 18-mile diagonal road going from Phoenix through Glendale to the town of Peoria in hopes of drawing in potential investors.

In 1891, Burgess Hadsell helped Murphy bring 70 Brethren and River Brethren families to the area to form a temperance colony. As news traveled about the town's ban on alcohol, more settlers became interested in Glendale and moved to the area. In 1895, the original town site was platted and included a town park and several business lots. A railroad going from Prescott to Phoenix was also built to allow the transportation of goods from Glendale to the north and so forth.

Nonetheless, one of the major factors in the increase of settlers in the city was the Beet Sugar Factory that was established in 1906. As of 2019, Glendale has a population of 252,381 people.
