Bloomsburg is a town within Columbia County, Pennsylvania. As the seat of the county, it is also one of the principal communities of the Bloomsburg-Berwick, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area and the only municipality in Pennsylvania to be incorporated as a town. The first European settlement in the town dates back to when James McClure constructed a log cabin in the area in 1772. However, the official founding of Bloomsburg in 1802 is credited to settler Ludwig Eyer. Up until the mid-1800s, Bloom Township was simply a small village. The discovery of ore in the area helped it develop into a booming iron industry.
On March 4, 1870, Bloomsburg was incorporated as a town. Referred to as "The only incorporated town in Pennsylvania," it holds the distinction of being the only official town in the state. As of the 2019 estimate, it has a population of 13,811 people.
Bloomsburg Historic District encompasses 668 contributing buildings, one contributing object, and one contributing site in the central business district and surrounding residential areas of the Town of Bloomsburg. Notable buildings in the district are the Courthouse, Town Hall, Carver Hall at the Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, Caldwell Consistory and St. Paul's Episcopal Church. On September 8, 1983, the national historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
The Rupert Covered Bridge N0. 56 is a covered bridge located in Rupert and Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. As one of the 23 covered bridges in Columbia County, Rupert Bridge is the oldest existing and widest covered bridge in the county. The three-span burr truss-arch bridge is open to traffic and is in the United States Geological Survey quadrangle of Catawissa. On November 29, 1979, it was added to the NRHP.
Held at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds on West Main Street, Bloomsburg Fair was started in 1854 by Caleb Barton as an agricultural exhibition. Now the largest fair in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the event has around half a million attendance of people each year. It is one of the only quarter-mile dirt tracks that are still open during the winter season for harness racing. The fair features games, carnival rides, horse races, demolition derby, animal shows, contests, arts and crafts, and foods. Some of its contests include:
Popular musical artists who have performed at the Bloomsburg Fair Grandstand are Seether, Sugarland, Lady Antebellum, 38 Special, Foreigner, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Trace Adkins and Taylor Swift for her first major concert. Comedians like Bill Engvall and Jeff Dunham have also held their acts there.
For a recreational space to go to all throughout the year, the Bloomsburg Town Park on Ft. McClure Boulevard is a great spot for you to check out. The park provides many acres of activities for visitors. This includes basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer fields, baseball fields, and a fitness trail. There are also the Bicentennial Entertainment Pavilion (bandshell), picnic pavilions, charcoal grills and a lagoon, which is fully stocked for the town's annual fishing derby. Pavilions are first come, first serve during the week but must be reserved on the weekends.
