Short History of Chester

Chester is a census-designated place (CDP) in the county of Chesterfield County, Virginia. The bedroom community is located at the geographical coordinates of 37.353449 degrees north latitude and 77.435767 degrees west longitude and is within proximity of the communities of Chesterfield, Afton, Centralia, Windsor Hills, Woodvale and Bellwood. The main roads serving the area are World War II Veterans Memorial Highway (Virginia Route 288), Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike ( Interstate 95), U.S. Route 1, Jefferson Davis Highway (U.S. Route 301), W. Hundred Rd. (Virginia Route 10, and Harrowgate Road (Virginia Route 144).

The downtown area of the Chester community was once an intersection for the north-south Richmond and Petersburg Railroad and the east-west Clover Hill Railroad. Today, these railroads are the Atlantic Coast Line and Tidewater and Western Railroad, respectively. During the American Revolution, the Osborne's Landing neighborhood of the CDP was where General Benedict Armond destroys most of Virginia's navy in the Action at Osborne's. In the American Civil War, the Battle of Chester Station occurred at the Chester Station in May of 1864 as part of the Bermuda Hundred Campaign. Today, the Chester CDP has been steadily developing. As of the 2010 census, it has a population of 20,987 people.

Chester Linear Park

Chester Linear Park was once the home of the Seaboard Air Line in 1900. Situated off of Route 10, this strip of land is one of the 1600 rail trails that are supported by the nonprofit organization Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. The 0.68 miles walking trail is perfect for a leisure stroll in the morning, afternoon, or weekend. You can also bring your dog along for a quick exercise.
