In a disturbing case of child sexual abuse in New Jersey, a Passaic County jury has found Sergio Bernal, 36, guilty of multiple charges related to the sexual assault of a minor over a period of nearly seven years. This conviction highlights the importance of protecting vulnerable children and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.

Case Details

The investigation into Bernal's crimes began in August 2020 when the victim, then 16 years old, reported being sexually abused since October 2013. The abuse occurred at various residences in Passaic, demonstrating the prolonged nature of the perpetrator's actions.

Charges and Conviction

Bernal was convicted of at least 20 charges, including:

  • First-degree aggravated sexual assault
  • Child endangerment
  • Sexual assault
  • Bribery
  • Tampering with witnesses and physical evidence

Attempted Witness Tampering

Following the initial indictment, Bernal and a co-conspirator attempted to bribe witnesses and the victim with money and financial assistance to recant their statements. This attempt at obstruction of justice further demonstrates the lengths to which abusers may go to avoid consequences.

Legal Consequences

The conviction carries severe penalties for Bernal:

  • 25 years to life in prison for one of the first-degree aggravated sexual assault charges
  • 10 to 20 years in prison for the other two first-degree charges
  • 5 to 10 years in prison for second-degree sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child charges

Additionally, Bernal will be subject to lifelong parole supervision and required to register under Megan's Law.

The Importance of Reporting Abuse

This case underscores the critical importance of reporting suspected child abuse. By coming forward, the victim in this case helped bring a long-term abuser to justice, potentially preventing future victims.
