In 2015, the Barstow Police Department received a report that Hassell had been engaged in an illicit relationship with a 17-year-old student. After further investigation, the authorities deemed the allegations to be true and arrested Hassell.

Hassell was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave, but resigned soon after. Prior to becoming the school's principal, Hassell served as the head boys basketball coach and head coach of the girls track and field team at Barstow High School. He was also an assistant for the Barstow High School football team during the 2014 season, according to the Daily Press.
