Danny Hill Convicted On Molestation Charges

In court testimony, the victim told jurors that Hill’s abuse began when she was 14 years old, spanning the course of six years. Yet some survivors believe justice has yet to be done. Neither of the churches at which Hill ministered have been held accountable for their role in the minister’s sexual abuse.

According to the News-Gazette, Danny O. Hill served as a minister at Southern Baptist churches in Gibson City and Fisher, Indiana. He also worked as a substitute teacher at Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley High School, as well as serving as a chaplain for Carl Hospice in Champaign-Urbana. It is currently unknown whether he was ever accused of sexual abuse during his time as a substitute teacher, though the possibility remains open.

In 2005, a jury in Ford County found Hill guilty of repeatedly sexually assaulting a young woman from the time she was 14 years old. He faced a prison sentence of between 4 and 15 years and was made to register as a sex offender in Illinois.

From recent media reports, it appears that sexual abuse is rampant within Southern Baptist congregations. Over the last two decades, an astounding 700 victims have come forward to accuse Southern Baptist ministers and volunteers of sexual misconduct. But instead of tackling this problem head-on, the Southern Baptist Convention has thus far chosen to ignore it. Worse yet, many survivors say Southern Baptist churches have concealed sexual abuse cases from the secular authorities and the public.

Needless to say, this state of affairs is unacceptable. In a healthy church, sexual abuse survivors aren’t silenced or told to shut up. They are supported and listened to. In a healthy church, dangerous sexual predators aren’t protected. They are exposed and punished. Yet to this day, the Southern Baptist Convention has not published a set policy on responding to sexual abuse allegations for local churches to follow.
