Delaware County, also known as Delco, is a county located in Pennsylvania, established on September 26, 1789. The county is adjacent to Philadelphia and holds the county seat in the town of Media.

History

Originally inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape tribe of Native American Indians, the land was later claimed by English, Swedish and Dutch settlers in the early 17th century. Soon after, King Charles II of England granted William Penn a grant to establish a colony that today is known as Pennsylvania.

Upon the founding of PA, Penn then divided the state into three counties, Bucks, Chester, and Philadelphia. The southeastern part of Chester County was split off from the remainder in 1789 and given the name Delaware County after the Delaware River.

Demographics

Delaware County has a population of around 566, 747 and is considered the 5th highly populated county in all of Pennsylvania. Information from the United States census in 2010 shares that the counties ethnic make-up was estimated as:

  • 71% White, Irish, German, Italian, and other non-Hispanic
  • 19% Black or African American
  • 4.7% Asian
  • 3% Hispanic or Latino
  • 1% or less of Native American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, and other ethnicities

Of the population, there is an estimated amount of 200,000 households, with 140,000 families that resided in Delaware County. The median household income is about $50,000, with the family media income being slightly more at about $60,000.

Delaware County provides tons of parks and outdoor activities for families and guests to enjoy. One of the largest parks, Pennsylvania State Park, is located in the county, as well as the following:

  • Smedley Park
  • Upland Park
  • Rose Tree Park
  • Kent Park
