Somerton is a neighborhood in the far northeastern part of Philadelphia. It is bounded by East County Line Road and the Poquessing Creek on the north, Roosevelt Boulevard on the east, Red Lion Road on the south, and the Philadelphia County and Montgomery County line on the west. The neighborhood is also situated adjacent to Bustleton, Byberry, Normandy, the townships of Bensalem and Lower Southampton, and Lower Moreland Township.
The area was initially known as Smithfield during its early establishment years. Part of Moreland Township, the village was later renamed Somerton for Jacob Sommer, whose family has lived in the area for over four generations. Although some maps had the name of the area as Smithfield until the 1840s, the local post office had already changed its name to Somerton in 1830.
The neighborhood is home to a large population of foreign-born immigrants that are mostly from Russia and India. According to Niche, Somerton is the 60th best neighborhood to live in Philadelphia. It has a population of 34,459 people. 59% of the residents in the area own their homes. The median value of a home in the neighborhood is $235,057.
