History of Lee's Summit

Originally, the town was the 'Town of Strother', founded in 1865 by William B. Howard. Howard was eventually arrested for being a Confederate during the Civil War and would take his family back to Kentucky. After the war and when the Missouri Pacific Railroad was surveying for a route, Howard platted the town with 70 acres. In 1868, the town was renamed the 'Town of Lee's Summit'. This name change was in honor of Dr. Pleasant John Graves Lea who was a United States Postmaster but was killed in 1862.

It is thought that when the surveyors were in the area, the locals wanted to name the town in honor of the early settler, who had a farm on a high point near the tracks, and whose murder was close to the depot. They chose the name 'Lee's Summit' but it wasn't until later that they realized they misspelled with two e's.

Growth & Demographics

The town would continue to grow across the 19th and 20th centuries. The R.A. Long, a  lumber company owner, built his estate on the western edge of the city. This would eventually include 42 buildings, 5 barns, a mansion, and a church across 1,700 acres. The Longview Farm would become a showplace farm, but today it houses the Longview Farm Elementary school and Longview Community College.

In the 2010 census, there were 91,364 people living in the city within 34,429 households. The 2020 census recorded an increase to 101,108 residents. In 2010, the population was 86.1% white, 8.4% African American and 3.9% Hispanic or Latino of any race. The average age was 35 years old and for every 100 women, there would be 91.9 males.
