Mishawaka is a city in the Penn Township of St. Joseph County, Indiana. Located on the St. Joseph River, it is the principal city of the South Bend–Mishawaka, IN-MI, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city's history began in the 1830s with the discovery of bog iron deposits. In 1831, the town of St. Joseph Iron Works was established as settlers moved to the area to mine the deposits. In 1833, it was incorporated with Indiana City and two other small towns to form the city of Mishawaka.
In September of 1872, a fire destroyed most of the city's business district. As citizens worked to rebuild the area, new businesses moved into Mishawaka and made it prosper. This includes Perkins Windmills, the Doge Manufacturing Company and the Mishawaka Wollen and Rubber Company (Uniroyal). By the late 1800s, the city had become known as the "Peppermint Capital of the World." In the mid-1900s, the economy for Mishawaka shifted to small industry and retail service.
As of the 2010 census, the city has a population of 48,252 people and a total area of 17.348 square miles. It is nicknamed "the Princess City."
