Description of Madison Heights

Madison Heights is a census-designated place in the county of Amherst, Virginia. Part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area, it is located at the coordinates of 37.439406 degrees north latitude and 79.117259 degrees west longitude. According to the United States Census Bureau, Madison Heights has a total read of 19.5 square miles. 19.2 square miles of which is land, and 0.31 is water. As of the 2010 census, the CDP has a population of 11,285. The main roads serving the area are Amelon Road (Virginia Route 130), S. Amherst Highway (U.S. Route 29 Bus), U.S. Route 29, Dixie Airport Road ( Virginia Route 677), Wright Shop Road (Virginia Route 622), and Old Town Connector (Virginia Route 210).

Education

The Madison Heights CDP is part of the Amherst County Public Schools District. Schools situated in the area are:

  • Amelon Elementary School
  • Madison Heights Elementary School
  • Monelison Middle School

The CDP is also home to the Temple Christian School. It is a private school established on September 4, 1973, as part of the Temple Baptist Church.

Fort Riverview

Fort Riverview (44AH91 and 44AH195) is a historic archaeological site near Madison Heights. Built around 1863, it was used by the Confederate States Amry to protect the Six Mile Bridge and James River and Kanawha Canal system that runs along the James River. On April 18, 1989, the fort was designated on the Virginia Landmarks Register (VLR). In November of the same year, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

Gait's Mill Complex

The national historic district of Galt's Mill Complex is situated near the CDP. It encompasses 21 buildings, one site, 8 structures and one object. Notable parts of the district include the Train Bridge, Aqueduct, Boathouse, Railroad, Millrace and Dam Ruins, Home House, Mill House, and the two-story brick Mill. In 2009, the Galt's Mill Complex was designated on the VLR and added to the NRHP.

Oak Lawn

Oak Lawn is a historic home in the Madison Heights CDP. Also known as Burford House, the two-story, three-bay frame house was built around 1810. It features design elements from the Federal and Greek Revival architectural style. Located on Winridge Drive, it was designated on the VLR on June 8, 2006. It was later listed on the NRHP on September 6, 2006.

Hanshill

Hanshill is a historic summer home and camp near the area of Madison Heights. Also known as Rough House, the property dates back to around 1880 when the Suhling family developed it. The Y.W.C.A. Spring Box and a corn crib is associated with the house. In 1925, the 1 and 1/2-story Hanshill frame dwelling was built in the Rustic Revival style. It includes a servant's quarters, bunkhouse/garage, and an outdoor tennis court. On September 6, 2006, it was added to the NRHP. In 2011, it was designated on the VLR.
