Short History of Rhawnhurst

Rhawnhurst is a neighborhood in the northeastern section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is roughly bordered by the Pennypack Creek to the north, Roosevelt Boulevard to the east, Cottman Avenue to the south, and the Pennway Street to the west. Area real estate developers named the neighborhood for George and William Rhawn.

Although much of Philadelphia up to Cottman Avenue was developed by 1940, the area that is now Rhawnhurst was mostly farmland until the baby boom after World War II. It raised the demand for housing into the 1960s. Homes in Rhawnhurst were mostly built by local home builder A.P. Orleans and were typically twin homes. According to Niche, the neighborhood offers an urban, suburban mix area feel. It has a population of 28,331 people. Around 55% of the residents own their homes, which has an average value of $191,082.

Rhawnhurst Recreation Center

Rhawnhurst Recreation Center, or the George C. Pelbano Recreation Center,  is a 10-acre park on Bustleton Avenue in Rhawnhurst. Part of the Philadelphia rebuild project, it provides residents and visitors to the area with a wonderful space for active and passive recreational fun. The park includes a playground, basketball and tennis courts, a batting cage, and sports fields. The recreational building at the center also offers multipurpose spaces, a gym and a fitness room. It is open Mondays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Tuesdays through Saturdays, it is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
