Summary of Clarksville

Clarksville is a town within Clark County, Indiana. Part of the Lousiville Metropolitan area, the site was first used by George Roger Clarks as a base of operations in the American Revolutionary War. After the war, a 150,000-acre tract of land was granted to Clark for his services. 1,000 acres of the land was set aside for the establishment of the town of Clarksville in 1783. It would be the oldest American town in the Northwest Territory and has claimed to be where the Lewis and Clark Expedition started – a two-figure statue near the Falls of the Ohio commemorates this.

During the 1800s, a number of attempts were made to build a canal around the falls. However, every attempt was met with failure. When the Louisville and Portland Canal was built by the federal government in 1826, the race to build the canal was lost. The town struggled with growth as the Ohio Falls made river transport from the area difficult. In the Great Flood of 1937, the town suffered even more as it was submerged under 12 feet of water.

Nonetheless, because of the destruction done by the flood, Clarksville was rebuilt following a new modern city plan. After World War II, the housing boom created new jobs and growth in the town. It is now a major shopping hub of Southern Indiana. As of the 2010 census, Clarksville has a population of 21,724 people and a total area of 10.17 square miles.

Falls of the Ohio State Park

Falls of the Ohio State Park lie on the banks of the Ohio River in Clarksville. It is part of the Falls of the Ohio National Wildlife Conservation and was established in 1990. The Falls is home to the George Roger's Clark cabin, where Lewis and Clark met for their expedition. It also features the largest exposed Devonian period of Jeffersonville Limestone fossil beds in the world. Another part of the park is its interpretive center. Designed by well-established exhibit developer Terry Chase, it functions as a museum with exhibits focusing on the natural history of the findings of the fossil beds and the human history of the area. The park is open every day from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Colgate Clock

Colgate Clock is a notable feature of the town of Clarksville. As one of the largest clocks in the world, it is 40 feet in diameter. The clock is located at the former Colgate-Palmovile factory and was first illuminated in the town on November 17, 1924. It was designed by Colgate engineer Warren Day and built by the Seth Thomas Clock Company. Since the relocation of the factory, the clock has been placed on the 10 Most Endangered Landmarks list of the History Landmarks Foundation of Indiana twice. There are no plans to preserve the clock, and Colgate has refused to add the factory to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
