Hartranft is a neighborhood within the central part of the North Philadelphia section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is on the border of the predominantly Hispanic eastern region of North Philadelphia and the predominantly Black central region of North Philadelphia. The area is bordered by York Street to the north, Front Street to the east, Cecil B. Moore Avenue to the south, and 6th Street to the west.

Temple University is a state-related public research university. It was founded by Russell Conwell, a Baptist minister, in 1884. From 1888 to 1907, it was named The Temple College of Philadelphia. On December 12, 1907, with its merger with the Philadelphia Dental College, the school was officially reincorporated as Temple University. In 1965, it became a Pennsylvania state-related university.

The Founder's Garden is the main centerpiece for Temple University. Located at the heart of the school, the historic 1960s-era Modernist sunken garden was originally designed by notable landscape architect George Patton. Today, a 3.5 million-dollar reimagining led by Sikora Wells Appel updated the garden to include a new water feature, seating, lighting, paving and planting; yet still, keep its original design intent. The garden is the burial place of Russell Conwell and features a bust of Conwell to mark his grave. It also features a bronze statue of the university's mascot, an owl.
Penrose Recreation Center is a two-acre site on West Susquehanna Avenue in Hartranft. Providing a recreational space for visitors and residents to the neighborhood, it provides amenities like:
There is also a one-room multipurpose recreation building that includes a public computing center. Throughout the year, it is the host of a variety of youth and adult activities for the community. The recreation center is open Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
