About Bloomington

Bloomington is a city in the central region of Indiana. The county seat of Monroe County, it is the "Gateway to Scenic Southern Indiana" and the seventh-largest city in the state. Before the city was established, it was home to the Indigenous people of Miami, Eel River Miami, Delaware and Potawatomi. In 1818, the area was platted by a group of settlers from the Carolinas, Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. They had been impressed by the "haven of blooms." In 1827, Bloomington was incorporated. As of the 2019 census, the city has an estimated population of 85,755 people.

Indiana University Bloomington

Indiana University Bloomington was established on January 20, 1820. The public research university is the flagship and largest campus of Indiana University. It is home to a number of schools and programs such as the Jacobs School of Music, Computing and Engineering, the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, the Luddy School of Informatics, the Kelley School of Business, the School of Nursing, the School of Public Health, the School of Optometry, the School of Education, the Maurer School of Law, the Media School, and the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies. As of 2017, the university has a total enrollment of 43,710 students.

Wylie House Museum

Wylie House Museum was constructed in 1835 by the first president of Indiana University, Andrew Wylie. Located just off the Bloomington campus on East Second Street, it is now a museum featuring collections of family artifacts, archival materials and photographs. The heirloom gardens also offer historic interpretation, education and seed-saving programs. Managed by the IU Libraries, the historic house museum is currently closed to the public. When it is open, the house is a campus resource for research and classes.
