About Buckeye

Buckeye is the westernmost suburb of the metropolitan area of Phoenix, Arizona. Part of Maricopa County, the city was settled in 1877 by Thomas Newt Clanton and a group of six men, three women and ten children. They had migrated from Creston, Iowa, to the area. Between 1884 and 1886, 10 miles of the Buckeye Canal was developed by Malie M. Jackson, who named it after Ohio's – his home state – moniker, "The Buckeye State." In 1888, the town was established with the name Sidney, after Jackson's hometown. In 1910, its name was changed to Buckeye because of the significance of the canal.

The town of Buckeye was incorporated in 1929. After a vote in 2014, the town was incorporated into a city. As of the 2019 census, it has a population of 79,620. For 2017 and 2018, Buckeye was the fastest-growing city in the U.S. Its master planned communities include Riata West, Westpark, Sundance, Tartesso, Verrado and Festival Ranch. Other planned communities that have not been built are Douglas Ranch, Elianto, Henry Park, Montierre, Sienna Hills, Silver Rock, Southwest Ranch, Spurlock Ranch, Sun Valley Villages, Westwind and Trillium.
