The City of Galax

Galax is an independent city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Bounded by Grayson County to the southwest and Carroll County to the northeast, the area of Galax was once part of the 800-acre land grant given to James Buchanan by the English Crown in 1756. The first plat map for the city dates back to December 1903. In 1906, the town of Galax was chartered by the Virginia General Assembly. It was named for the evergreen groundcover plant Galax urceolata after an official suggestion by a Norfolk and Western Railway Company.

By the 1960s, the industrial town of Galax was home to the following:

  • Six furniture factories
  • A mirror factory
  • Over four textile companies
  • Two large department stores
  • A lumber company
  • Carnation Milk
  • Coca-Cola Bottling Company
  • Clover Company

On Dember 6, 1953, the Town of Galax was separated from the counties of Carroll and Grayson and became its own independent city. In the 2000s, as part of an economic development effort, the City of Galax partnered with other neighboring communities and private businesses to create the public-private partnership Wired Road Authority. The PPP went on to create open-access integrated regional broadband networks with 100-megabit connections in 2009 and gigabit connections in 2013.

As of 2010, the population of Galax was 7,042. The city had become known as a center of traditional "old-time" music and musicians. It and the surrounding region are notable for traditional instrument-making. Since 1935, the popular old-time and bluegrass music festival Old Fiddler's Convention has been held annually in the city.

Historic Sites

Within the city of Galax are a number of historic areas and properties that have been individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). These include the Old Grayson County Courthouse and Clerk's Office, Gordon C. Felts House, Dr. Virgil Cox House, A. G. Pless Jr. House, and the Galax Commercial Historic District.

Education

The city of Galax is served by its own school system. The Galax City Public Schools District is home to three schools. Galax Elementary School, which offers classes from pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade, Galax Middle School, and Galax High School.

Recreation

Although Galax is not home to many recreational attractions, there are many located near the city. The 57-mile New River Trail State Park passes through Galax. It features two tunnels, around 30 small bridges and trestles, three major bridges, and a historic shot tower. Hikers, cyclists, horseback riders, canoeists, boaters, and fishermen often frequent the park. Other parks near the city are the Crooked Creek Wildlife Management Area, Grayson Highlands State Park and Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. The longest linear park in America, the Blue Ridge Parkway, also runs through Galax. It includes the Blue Ridge Music Center, which features a visitor center, concert center, and mountain music museum near the city.
