The Town of Keysville

Keysville is a town in the eastern portion of Charlotte County, Virginia. Located at the geographical coordinates of 37.040 degrees north latitude and 78.4833 degrees west longitude, it is within proximity to the communities of Briery, Virso, Arvins Store, Fort Mitchell, Drakes Branch, and Charlotte Court House. The main roads serving the area are Kings Highway (U.S. Routes 15 and 360), King Street and Church Street (Virginia Route 40), H Street, Merry Oaks Drive (Virginia Route 59), and Front Street. The town was first settled by John Key when he opened a tavern and relay station on King's Road in 1809. The area around the station was known as Keysville by 1826. In 1887, it was incorporated as the Town of Keysville.

Demographics

As of the 2000 census, there is a population of 817 people living in the town of Keysville and a population density of 6940 people per square mile. The area is racially made up of:

  • 1.10% Hispanic or Latino of Any Race
  • 0.49% Two or More Races
  • 0.12% Asian

The town also includes 359 households and 194 families, with an average size of 2.03 and 2.79, respectively. These households consist of:

  • 43.2% were Individuals
  • 34.0% were Married Couples
  • 25.3% with Children under 18
  • 20.9% had Someone Living Alone 65 or Older
  • 16.2% had Female Householders

Within Keysville, the median income of a household was $25,750. Males make on average an income of $27,750, while females make $20,625. Around 16.9% of the population were living below the poverty line. As of 2010, it has been reported that the population has increased to 832.

Southside Virginia Community College was founded in 1970 we w public community college. With two campuses in Virginia – the John H. Daniel Campus just to the east of Keysville and one near Alberta in Brunswick County – it has the largest geographic service area out of all of the community colleges in the state. Serving the city of Emporia and 10 counties, some of its off-campus locations are online, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in Emporia and South Boston, Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center, South Hill, Estes Community Center in Chase City, and the SVCC Occupational and Technical Center in Blackstone.
