The Franciscan Center, Inc. was established by Sally Ley and Jean Kelly in 1989 as a homeless shelther and sack lunch program. It was inspired by the centuries-old worldwide Secular Franciscan Order. Over the years, the center has evolved to serve the needs of the community. More than 4,300 individuals are dedicated to making the programs of the community center a success each year. These volunteers range from five years of age to 85 years of age. They help to create blessings in other people's lives and lend a helping hand whenever possible. The programs that the Franciscan Center Ministries feature are the Sack Lunch Program, Food Pantry Program, Medicine Cabinet, and Feed My Sheep. There is also an annual dinner auction event held every year in October. It is the center's largest source of operating support for the year.
Located on East Maple Grove Avenue in Pettit-Rudisill, its office is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Medicine Cabinet is open every Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. The Food Pantry is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11 a.m. The Sack Lunch Program is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
