Schererville is a town in the St. John Township of Lake County, Indiana. Before English settlement, the area was known as the "Crossroads" because of the Native American trails that intersected there. In 1865, Nicholas Scherer came to the area at the southern tip of Lake Michigan and found the community of Schererville.
Today, the town is served by Indianapolis Boulevard and Wicker Avenue (U.S. Route 41) and Lincoln Highway (U.S. Route 30), with Interstate 80/94 and Interstate 65 nearby. These transcontinental routes give the town the slogan of the "Crossroads of the Nation." As of the 2010 census, Schererville has a population of 29,243 people and a total area of 14.763 square miles.
Scherwood Golf Course was founded in 1966 by Bill Christenson. Opened on September 4, 1967, the golf course was an extension of the private club, the Scherwood Club. In 1979, the golf property was acquired by Marvin and Eileen Hanson. Today, the 27 hole facility features an 18 hole – par 71 regulation course and a 9 hole – par 30 executive course. It also offers a clubhouse with the following:
The 165-acre semi-private Scherwood Golf has become one of the most popular courses in the northwestern part of Indiana.
Scherwood Park is a 9.5-acre park just off of Joliet Street. Originally the site of the former Scherwood Club, it was sold to the Town of Schererville in 2004. Providing a recreational space for residents and visitors of the area, it features the Schererville Community Center, the town's Parks Department office, the historic Hilbrich Log Cabin, shelters, an outdoor chess plaza, picnic areas, a nature area, a paved walking trails, and open space. The park's hours of operation are daily from dawn to dusk.
The Hilbrich Log Cabin is said to be the oldest house in Schererville and possibly Lake County. Dating back to 1847, it was built by Nicholas Hilbrich when he immigrated to the area from Germany. The cabin and its property remained in the Hilbrich family until it was sold in 2007 to people who planned on demolishing it. Hearing of this news, the town officials acquired the cabin and relocated it to Scherwood Park in July 2008. As of 2016, the historic log cabin has been fully restored. Tours and visits to the home can be arranged through the Schererville Parks Department.
