It is bordered by Tacony and Mayfair on the north, the Delaware River and Interstate 95 on the east, Bridgesburg on the south, and Frankford on the west. The area was the site of Mathias Baldwin's – a locomotive builder – estate of the same name "Wissinoming," which sat near Tacony Street and Van Kirk Streets.

James J. Sullivan Elementary School is a historic school in the Wissinoming and Frankford area. Also part of the same school district, it was built in 1929 and 1930 and designed by Irwin T. Catharine. The three-story, eight-bay, yellow brick elementary school is of the Art Deco architectural style. On November 18, 1988, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
