Description of Wissinoming

Wissinoming is a neighborhood within the Near Northeast section of the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is bordered by Tacony and Mayfair on the north, the Delaware River and Interstate 95 on the east, Bridgesburg on the south, and Frankford on the west. The area was the site of Mathias Baldwin's – a locomotive builder  – estate of the same name "Wissinoming," which sat near Tacony Street and Van Kirk Streets.

Today, Wissinoming has a population of 25,006 people and offers a dense suburban area feel. 60% of its residents own their homes. The median value of a home in the neighborhood is $106,494. The median rent price is $1,009. Households in Wissinoming make, on average, an income of $40,156.

Education

Wissinoming is home to two public elementary schools: Henry W. Lawton Elementary School and James J. Sullivan Elementary School.

Henry W. Lawton Elementary School can be found on Jackson Street. Part of the Philadelphia City School District, it has a total enrollment of 708 students from grades pre-Kindergarten through 5th. Its student-to-teacher ratio is 15 to 1.

James J. Sullivan Elementary School is a historic school in the Wissinoming and Frankford area. Also part of the same school district, it was built in 1929 and 1930 and designed by Irwin T. Catharine. The three-story, eight-bay, yellow brick elementary school is of the Art Deco architectural style. On November 18, 1988, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

Wissinoming Park

Wissinoming Park is a large park in the neighborhood of Wissinoming. Located on Frankford Avenue, it is a popular recreational designation for residents in the area. The tree-lined park offers:

  • Tennis courts
  • Paved walking path and jogging space
  • Seasonal splash pad
  • Kid's playground
  • Park benches
  • Picnic area
  • Restrooms

There are shaded areas located throughout for visitors to enjoy a lunch, picnic or outing on the green grassy area. Pets are allowed in the park; however, they must be kept on a leash. The Wissinoming Park is open every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
